Some viewers of Call Me By Your Name have wondered if anything is wrong with Elio in Call My By Your Name. On one occasion Elio is scene to have a blood nose and another he is seen vomiting. But is he sick?
Is Elio Sick in CMBYN?
Although there are some scenes where Elio appears to be physically sick in CMBYN, these aren’t meant to hint at a deeper illness or sickness. Elio’s mother tells us there is nothing to worry about and we learn these are a regular occurrence. The nosebleed is not meant to represent anything more.
Why Does Elio have a nosebleed
There is nothing in the book or the movie that explicitly tells us the cause of Elio’s nosebleeds. It could have just been added so the viewer gets an opportunity to see Oliver’s concern for Elio and his wellbeing.
As to what could have caused the nosebleed? People get nosebleeds especially when it’s hot. While it can be shocking to see it usually isn’t a cause for concern. And Elio’s parents definitely don’t seem concerned. Elio himself doesn’t seem too concerned, only embarrassed that it happened in front of guests and Oliver.

There is nothing wrong with Elio. He isn’t sick in the movie and in the book Elio’s life is chronicled into adulthood and there are no health issues. The scene with Elio’s nosebleed lets us see Oliver’s caring and concerned nature.
